What the Course Covers

The Ohio CCW curriculum is state-mandated and standardized. Every topic below is required by law and covered in full during both the in-person class and the online hybrid. Nothing is skipped or abbreviated.

Book Your Seat

Firearm Safety

The four universal rules of firearm safety, safe storage, safe handling, and the responsibilities that come with carrying a concealed firearm in public.

Ohio Law and Legal Considerations

Ohio Revised Code as it applies to concealed carry. Where you can and cannot carry, duty to notify law enforcement, use of force law, and criminal and civil liability.

Firearm Equipment and Selection

Handgun types, calibers, ammunition selection, holster options, and how to choose a carry firearm that fits your lifestyle, hand size, and experience level.

Fundamentals of Marksmanship

Stance, grip, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control, and follow-through. Covered in classroom instruction and then applied during the live-fire qualification.

Mindset and Situational Awareness

Avoidance, de-escalation, and the decision-making process for when lethal force is legally and morally justified. The mental side of carrying responsibly.

Live-Fire Range Qualification

The mandatory range component. Shooters demonstrate proficiency with a handgun at multiple distances under instructor supervision. All safety rules apply. Eye and ear protection required.

Be Prepared
Required — No Exceptions

What You Must Bring

Valid government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or Passport). Must be current and not expired.
Closed-toe shoes. Sandals, open-toe shoes, and flip-flops are not permitted on the range floor under any circumstances.
High-neck or crew-neck shirt. Hot brass ejected from a firearm can cause burns — low-cut or open-collar shirts are strongly discouraged.
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled class time. Once class begins, the doors are closed and no late entries are permitted. If you miss the start time you will need to reschedule for a future class.
Your Firearm and Ammo

Firearm and Ammunition

You are welcome to bring your own handgun. It must be unloaded and secured in a case or bag when entering the building.
If you are bringing your own firearm, ammunition must be factory-new (no reloads). Keep it in your vehicle until directed by your instructor.
No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom portion of the course at any time.
Don’t have a firearm? Rentals are available from our pro shop. Ask at the counter when you check in.
Ammunition can be purchased at the pro shop the day of class. We carry a wide selection of common handgun calibers.
Everything Else

Provided and Optional

Eye and ear protection are provided at no additional charge. You are welcome to bring your own if preferred.
All classroom materials, targets, and course documentation are provided.
Bring a pen and something to take notes with — there is a written exam component.
Plan for lunch — a 30-minute break is included in the in-person class. Bring food or plan to pick something up nearby.
Dress comfortably. You’ll be on your feet during the range portion and seated for classroom instruction.

Common Questions
No. The in-person class and online hybrid are both designed for complete beginners. Our instructors will walk you through every step of the live-fire portion. If you have never fired a handgun before, that is completely fine — many of our students are first-timers.
Both options satisfy the full Ohio state requirement and result in the same Certificate of Competency. The in-person class completes everything in one Saturday (9am to 5:30pm) for $99. The online hybrid lets you complete the 6-hour classroom portion at home on your own schedule for $59, then you come in for a 2-hour qualification session on a Wednesday evening. Same instructors, same certification, different format.
No. Firearm rentals are available from our pro shop. If you do bring your own, it must be unloaded and secured in a case when you enter the building. Ammunition must be factory-new and should stay in your vehicle until your instructor tells you to bring it to the range.
You take your Certificate of Competency to your local County Sheriff’s office to apply for your Ohio Concealed Handgun License. Yes. Both the in-person class and the qualification session for the hybrid include a written exam covering Ohio law and firearm safety. The exam is straightforward if you’ve paid attention during the course — the material is covered thoroughly in the classroom portion. You also must pass the live-fire range qualification.
Contact us directly at 513-342-5840 and we’ll work with you to reschedule. Our instructors are here to help you succeed — if you have specific concerns about the range portion before attending, reach out ahead of time and we can talk through it.
Ohio has reciprocity agreements with many other states, meaning your Ohio Concealed Handgun License is recognized in those states. However, reciprocity laws change and vary — always verify the current laws for any state you plan to carry in before traveling. We cover reciprocity basics during the course.
Yes. A valid Ohio Concealed Handgun License substitutes for the standard background check on firearm purchases and FFL transfers. Bring it with you whenever purchasing a firearm or picking up an FFL transfer to expedite the process.
