The four universal rules, safe storage, safe handling, and the responsibilities that come with carrying in public.

Ohio Law and Legal Considerations

Ohio Revised Code, where you can and cannot carry, duty to notify law enforcement, use of force law, and criminal and civil liability.

Firearm Equipment and Selection

Handgun types, calibers, ammunition, holster options, and choosing a carry gun that fits your lifestyle and experience level.

Fundamentals of Marksmanship

Stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger control, and follow-through. Covered in class and applied during live-fire qualification.

Mindset and Situational Awareness

Avoidance, de-escalation, and the decision-making process for when lethal force is legally and morally justified.

Live-Fire Range Qualification

Shooters demonstrate proficiency at multiple distances under instructor supervision. Eye and ear protection required and provided.

What You Must Bring

Valid government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or Passport). Must be current and not expired.
Closed-toe shoes. Sandals and open-toe footwear are not permitted on the range under any circumstances.
High-neck or crew-neck shirt. Hot brass can cause burns. Low-cut or open-collar shirts are strongly discouraged.
Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Once class begins, the doors close and no late entries are permitted. If you miss the start time you will need to reschedule.
Firearm and Ammunition

Your Gun and Ammo

You are welcome to bring your own handgun. It must be unloaded and secured in a case when entering the building.
Ammunition must be factory-new. No reloads. Keep it in your vehicle until directed by your instructor.
No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom portion at any time.
Don’t have a firearm? Rentals are available from the pro shop. Ask at the counter when you check in.
Ammunition is available for purchase at the pro shop the day of class. We carry a wide selection of common handgun calibers.

What We Cover

Eye and ear protection are provided at no charge. Bring your own if preferred.
All classroom materials, targets, and course documentation are provided.
Bring a pen and something to take notes with. There is a written exam component.
Plan for lunch. A 30-minute break is included in the in-person class.
Dress comfortably. You’ll be on your feet during the range portion and seated for classroom instruction.

No. Both options are designed for complete beginners. Our instructors will walk you through every step of the live-fire portion. Many of our students have never fired a handgun before. Worried about the range portion specifically? We offer new shooter training (a one-on-one Personal Safety Officer session) if you’d like extra time on the range before class.
Both satisfy the full Ohio state requirement and result in the same Certificate of Competency. The in-person class completes everything in one Saturday (9am to 5:30pm) for $99. The online hybrid lets you complete the 6-hour classroom portion at home for $59, then you come in for a 2-hour Wednesday evening qualification session. Same instructors, same certification, different format.
No. Firearm rentals are available from our pro shop. If you bring your own, it must be unloaded and secured in a case when entering the building. Ammunition must be factory-new and should stay in your vehicle until your instructor says otherwise.
Take your Certificate of Competency to your local County Sheriff’s office to apply for your Ohio Concealed Handgun License. Bring the certificate, a valid photo ID, and the application fee. Processing times vary by county. We’ll give you everything you need at the end of class.
Yes. Both options include a written exam covering Ohio law and firearm safety. The exam is straightforward if you’ve paid attention to the course material. You also must pass the live-fire qualification.

Ohio has reciprocity agreements with many other states. However, reciprocity laws change, so always verify the current laws for any state you plan to carry in before traveling. We cover reciprocity basics during the course.
Yes. A valid Ohio Concealed Handgun License substitutes for the standard NICS background check on firearm purchases and FFL transfers, which speeds up the process. The transfer fee is the same either way. Bring your license whenever purchasing a firearm or picking up a transfer.

Bring your Certificate of Competency and a valid photo ID. Apply for your Ohio Concealed Handgun License in person. Most counties also accept mail applications.

Pay the Application Fee

The Ohio CHL fee is set by your county sheriff, typically $55 to $100. Contact your local sheriff’s office for the exact amount.

Receive Your License

Processing varies by county, typically 45 days. Your Concealed Handgun License arrives by mail once approved.
